GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL ON STEROIDS

2009

Allie took an occasional sip from the beer they’d thrust upon her and wondered whether she was simply being too uptight about the whole event. This wasn’t a gathering of dropouts and fringe members of society; most of the young people she saw were clean-cut uni student types. She’d seen the hilarious American teen and college movies from the eighties, but never believed the wild parties and prolific drug use was based on truth. From her new perspective, the movies seemed to be a tame version of Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale.

From the room, they’d moved to the swimming pool in front of the hotel next door where people were jam packed from street to building. Music played, the crowd swayed, and from a small stage at one end, a DJ coordinated a variety of games. The current activity was a belly flop competition from the springboard at the other end of the pool. Allie winced as men of varying sizes and commitment attempted to make the most far-reaching splash with their bodies. Current leader was a US Marine from Champaign, Illinois, who was about to go head-to-head for the crown with a very overweight student from Minnesota.

“These people come from thousands of miles across the country just for Spring Break?” Allie asked Ozzy, who stood next to her.

“You did,” he pointed out.

“I came to see you and have a few days at the beach,” she countered. “When you said come for Spring Break, I thought it was because you wouldn’t have classes. Not this.”

Ozzy shook his head. “Can you imagine anything like this happening back home?”

Allie laughed. “It’s like a Glasto Festival at the beach without the rain and mud, but on steroids. Times a hundred.”

“And this is the tamed-down version. According to Bruce, it was even bigger back before they clamped down and barred cars from the beach.”

“The cars drove on the sand?” Allie asked.

Ozzy grinned in the boyish way she remembered. “That procession of cars we were in today going up and down used to do the same thing, but on the beach itself.”

“They didn’t sink into the sand, and all get stuck?”

He shrugged his shoulders. “You stood on the beach there. It’s solid as rock, yeah? Must have been fine for the cars or they wouldn’t have done it.”

Allie stared at her friend. There were moments when she felt it was just like old times. He was in there somewhere, hiding behind this new facade of drinking and desperation to get to the next party. The same distractions were readily available in the universities back home, but neither of them had been consumed by booze, drugs, or the crowd who never made their morning classes. But it all seemed shinier here. Bigger, brighter, more open and accessible.

So many in the crowd looked like the perfect-bodied stars of reality TV shows. The men were bronzed, chiselled, and square jawed with perfect hair, while the women were stunning in skimpy bathing suits Allie had only seen on the beaches of France and Spain.
